A strong Nashville SEO firm sends reports you can read, shows dated ranking and Google Maps results with their sources, fixes technical problems, manages your local listings, is honest about what AI search can and cannot promise, keeps contracts plain and leaves every account in your name. Ask every firm on your list for all seven, including us.
Social Link wrote this guide and is one of the companies in it. We do not rank other companies, and no company paid to be included. How we built this guide.
Seven things that separate a strong SEO firm
Every SEO firm says it gets results. These seven criteria show you which ones can prove it, and which ones you can leave without losing your history.
1. Reports you can read
A good report says what changed, why, and what happens next, in plain words, with the numbers behind it. Ask for a sample report from a current client, with the name removed if needed. If you cannot tell from it whether things got better or worse, neither can the firm’s clients.
2. Dated results with sources
A ranking without a date, a search term and a source is not evidence. Ask for before and after positions for named search terms, the dates, and the tool that measured them. Ask what declined too: real reports show both. Ask whether you can speak with that client.
3. Technical SEO
Search engines have to crawl and understand a site before it can rank. Ask how the firm finds and fixes crawl errors, broken links, slow pages and duplicate content, and who makes the changes on your site. Ask, too, how the firm checks that a change did not break anything, and whether it watches the Page indexing and Core Web Vitals reports in Search Console.
4. Local listings
For a business that serves Nashville, the Google Business Profile can bring in as many calls as the website. Ask who manages the profile, its photos, posts and categories, and the replies to reviews, and how your listings on other directories are kept consistent.
5. AI search, with honest limits
AI answers draw on many of the same signals as search. Google says that optimizing for its AI features “is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO” (Google Search Central). Be wary of anyone who promises to put you in AI answers.
6. Contract length and how to leave
SEO takes months, so a minimum term can be reasonable. Ask how long it is, how it renews, how much notice ends it, and what you keep when it ends. Ask whether the firm hands over its keyword lists, reports and notes when the contract ends.
7. Who owns the accounts
Google Search Console, Google Analytics, your Business Profile and any ad accounts should belong to your company, with the firm added as a user. If the firm leaves, the history stays with you. Before work starts, ask for a list of every account the firm will use for your business, and whose name each one is in.
Questions to take into any sales call
Copy this list, ask every firm the same questions, and write down the answers.
- Can you show dated results for named search terms, and the tool that measured them?
- For that client, what declined while other terms rose?
- May I see a sample monthly report?
- What will you change on my site in the first 90 days, and who makes the changes?
- Who will manage my Google Business Profile and the replies to reviews?
- How do you approach AI search, and what will you not promise?
- How long is the contract, how does it renew, and how do I end it?
- Will Search Console, Analytics and my Business Profile stay in my company’s name?
- Do you follow Google Search Essentials? (Google suggests asking this; see Do you need an SEO?)
- How will you tell me what you changed and why?
Red flags
- A guaranteed #1 ranking. Google: “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google” (Do you need an SEO?).
- Reports without dates, search terms or sources.
- Accounts created in the firm’s name, or access you cannot keep.
- Links bought in bulk, or methods the firm will not explain.
- A promise to get you into ChatGPT or Google’s AI answers.
- A long contract with no way out if nothing improves.
What a readable SEO report looks like
Here is part of a real monthly report from our work for AMBEST, a national truck stop network: Semrush position tracking, United States, October 1 to 31, 2024. Look at the last row first. A report that shows only the wins is not telling you everything.
| Search | Oct 1 | Oct 31 | Monthly searches |
|---|---|---|---|
| truck stop near me | 24 | 10 | 74,000 |
| travel center | 22 | 8 | 27,100 |
| travel plaza near me | 14 | 7 | 8,100 |
| ambest truck stops | 1 | 1 | 880 |
| nearest truck stop to me | 16 | 35 | 74,000 |
Of 89 tracked terms that month, 36 improved and 23 declined. The same report showed organic search at 37.7% of sessions, up from 28.6% a year earlier, while total sessions fell (Google Analytics 4: 4,582 of 12,146 sessions, against 4,216 of 14,760). Ask for both numbers: a share can rise while the total falls. A lower position is better: #1 is the first unpaid result for that search. Search volumes are Semrush estimates.

How Social Link answers the same list
We hold ourselves to the same seven criteria. Where we can point to proof, it is linked and dated. Where we cannot, ask us, and expect the same straight answer you would want from anyone else on this list.
| Criterion | Our answer |
|---|---|
| Reports you can read | We run SEO for AMBEST, a national network of truck stops, and report on it every month. |
| Dated results with sources | AMBEST: from #24 to #10 for “truck stop near me” in October 2024. Not every term rose that month: of 89 tracked terms, 36 improved and 23 declined. |
| Technical SEO | Ask us what we would fix first on your site, and who would make the changes. |
| Local listings | We manage Cannery Hall’s Google Business Profile: the description, photos, posts, local schema, directory listings and replies to reviews. |
| AI search | Our AEO page says what we do for AI search and what nobody can promise. |
| Contract length | Our Master Services Agreement is published. Ask us about the term and notice for your project. |
| Who owns the accounts | Ask us whose name your Search Console, Analytics and Business Profile would be in. |
FAQ
How long does SEO take to work?
Usually months, not weeks, and it depends on your competition, the state of your site and how much useful content it has. Ask a firm what it expects to change in the first 90 days and how it will show you.
Can an SEO company guarantee a #1 ranking?
No. Google’s own hiring guidance says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google, and to find someone else if a firm promises first place.
What is the difference between SEO and local SEO?
SEO improves how your website ranks in search results. Local SEO adds your Google Business Profile, Google Maps and directory listings, which decide who appears when someone nearby searches for a service.
What should a monthly SEO report show?
What changed on the site, rankings for named search terms with dates and the tool used, traffic and leads from search, what declined and why, and the plan for the next month. If a report is mostly charts with no explanation, ask the firm to walk you through it.
Will SEO get my business into ChatGPT or Google’s AI answers?
No one can promise that. Google says its AI features rely on the same systems as its search results, so sound SEO is what makes a page eligible. Treat any guarantee of AI placement as a red flag.
How we built this guide
- Social Link wrote this guide and is one of the companies in it. We do not rank other companies, and no company paid to be included.
- The seven criteria are the questions a buyer can check before signing. They apply to every company in the table, Social Link included.
- The companies were found through public search results and directories for “SEO company Nashville”, then kept only if their own website lists the service and a Nashville-area address. Every fact in the table comes from that website. We show no ratings, reviews or awards, and we say nothing about any company’s results.
- Checked on October 20, 2026. Next review: January 2027, then every quarter.
